Dear East Jordan Public Schools Families and Community,
As many of you know, this winter brought a significant number of weather-related school cancellations that required us to make adjustments to our calendar in order to meet state instructional requirements. Throughout this process, our goal has remained the same: to fulfill our obligations while also being mindful of the impact calendar changes have on our students, families, and staff.
Recently, Governor Whitmer signed House Bill 5797 into law, providing schools with additional flexibility regarding forgiven instructional time due to weather-related closures. As a result of this new legislation, East Jordan Public Schools will be able to adjust our previously revised end-of-year calendar.
After reviewing the updated guidance and considering the needs of our students, families, and staff, the district will implement the following schedule adjustments:
Wednesday, June 10 will remain a full day of school.
Thursday, June 11 will now be a half day for students.
School on Friday, June 12 has been canceled.
As part of our earlier efforts to recover instructional time, the district had already added full instructional days on April 17 and May 22, and previously extended June 10 and June 11 to full days while adding June 12 to the calendar. This updated plan allows us to roll back part of those changes while still meeting all required obligations.
We understand that calendar adjustments create real challenges for families. Changes to work schedules, daycare arrangements, transportation, and family plans are significant matters that affect many households. Please know these are decisions we do not take lightly. Providing timely notice and clear communication is important to us, and we are working to share these updates as quickly and thoughtfully as possible so families can plan accordingly.
Our schools are also adjusting end-of-year schedules to align with these calendar changes:
The Middle/High School is developing a revised schedule for final exams and end-of-year activities, which will be communicated to families soon.
The Elementary School will likewise adjust and communicate end-of-year events and activities in the coming days.
We appreciate the patience, flexibility, and support our families and community continue to show throughout a school year that has required many adjustments. We remain committed to finishing the year strong while doing what we believe best serves our students, staff, and families.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of East Jordan Public Schools.
Sincerely,
Enos M. Bacon III
Superintendent, East Jordan Public Schools
