students in the watershed group

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching

method in which students learn by actively
engaging in real-world and personally
meaningful projects. The learning came
alive for these fifth graders as they shared
their project about improving the water
quality in East Jordan with community
partners!
Students discussed their next steps and
will build a rain barrel for our local
community. A rain barrel reduces runoff
and non-point source pollution. Rain
barrels will capture rainwater from the
roof that would otherwise become runoff.
This runoff picks up pollutants before
it heads into our beautiful local waters
like Lake Charlevoix. These fifth graders
are excited to help others AND our local
community! Thank you to Burnette
Foods and East Jordan Plastics who have
generously donated 55 gallon barrels for
this project!
Students fielded questions, practiced
speaking and listening, reflected on why
this work is important locally, adjusted
when a main speaker was unexpectedly
absent and made us so proud. This all
happened on the last full day before break
- pajama day!! Shout out to Ms. Doster for
her leadership in this project!
