MIDDLE SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
At the Middle School, enrichment
opportunities are twofold; they are in the form of elective options
and in ability based scheduling.
ELECTIVE OPTIONS: Each Middle School student receives
two elective classes per day. Among the elective offerings is
a course titled "Allied Arts." The Allied Arts class
is, in essence, a series of "mini" electives. Choices
include:
- Team Sports
- Odyssey
- Aquatics
- Yearbook
- Creative Writing
- Art Exploration
- Vocal Music
Each of these classes is designed
to meet the differentiated needs of students in a setting that
is either academic, co-curricular or a combination of both.
ABILITY BASED CURRICULUM: Classes such as Band, Technology and
Physical Education are heterogeneous (multi-age). The Middle
School has also begun experimenting with heterogeneous Math classes
and alternatives to Reading Academy such as the school newspaper,
entitled, "The Crimson Wave" for gifted readers and
writers. All of these allow students the opportunity to be in
a class that is geared toward meeting the specific needs of the
individual learner rather than classifying students solely by
grade level or age. Additional ability differentiation occurs,
when appropriate, within the core classes.
Additional opportunities for
high achieving students also include:
- ACT Explore (Interest-based
achievement test)
- ACT Workshop (Voluntary preparatory
program for 8th grade students)
Additional enrichment
opportunities include:
- Multimedia or Production class
- Technology Destinations class
(may include programming, web page development or other advanced
technology skills)
- Adventure Education for 7th
& 8th grade students
